Beautiful tree not very common, well suited for climates with hot summers (South and West of Europe). Conical shaped, it spreads after a few years.
The leaves, purple in spring, become dark green in summer and are hairy, tri to pentalobate. They stay late on the tree in autumn, and become purple again before falling.
This species of Liquidambar, native to Southeast China, has less cut leaves than the American Liquidambar (styraciflua). 'Ellen' has purple hairy young shoots and leaves, then dark green. Young trees are sensitive to late spring frosts, which can damage shoots.
