The color of the fertile central flowers is dependent on the pH and composition of the soil. The more the soil is acidic and in the presence of aluminum (sulphate of alumina, slate), the more the flowers will be purple to bluish.
Natural sport of HYDRANGEA macrophylla 'Mariesii', introduced from Japan in 1843, with light green foliage margined with pure white and variegated with golden yellow. Inflorescences appearing on the wood of the previous year, flat (lacecap) white to the blossoming then pinkish, and whose fertile central flowers turn to mauve pink.
