Single pure white flowers, contrast with the purple petioles and young shoots, powerful fragrance and good vigor : all to adopt it !
Every 2-3 years, just after flowering (July), prune the shrub below the floriferous parts to cause vigorous growth of new branches, which will give the flowers the following year.
This recent selection of Dr. Wilf Nicholls (Memorial University Botanical Garden in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) is characterized by its purple young shoots and vigor. The buds, stems and petioles are also dark purple, and contrast with the large pure white flowers with 4 petals and yellow-gold stamens, powerfully scented.
