Vigorous shrub with edible fruits, hosting an important auxiliary fauna. It is widely used in hedgerows.
Mediterranean vigorous shrub or small tree with multiple trunks forming a tuft of 10-12 branches up to 6 m. The leaves are deciduous, heart-shaped purple. Male catkins of 5-7 cm, redish, appear in February-March ; female flowers spikes are erected.
The hazelnut are edible.
