Grafting in head allows obtaining mini-trees. More than 1000 cultivars exist, with different leaves colors, shapes of leaves (palmated, laciniated) or wood colors.
The Japanese Maple is one of the most cultivated Maples, for bonsais, shrubs in small gardens or small trees. His starry leaves, green on the type or purple for the variety 'Atropurpureum', give it a very light port, "zen". Type (from seed) is used as a rootstock for cultivated varieties.
