Its marcescent leaves let the tree naked a very little time in late winter, making Hornbeams well suited for opaque hedges of rapid growth.

Prune in March just before bud break, and if necessary in early summer
The Hornbeam is a secondary tree common in the woodlands of Central and Northern Europe. Its leaves are entire, toothed, and are marcescent. It supports well pruning, and is frequently used in medium and high hedges in Atlantic or continental climates.
