Winter bloom very bright, fragrant, melliferous, contrasting with the foliage, purple at this time. Solid plant, able to colonize an undergrowth woodland or a shaded area.
The plant easily suckers and reseeds, and can even become invasive. However, it is easy to control in the garden.
Small evergreen shrub native to the northwest of United States. Its leaves are pinnate, and consist of 5-9 dark green glossy thorny leaflets, becoming purple in cold weather, resembling Holly leaves. In winter clusters of bright yellow bells appear, very fragrant, followed by bluish black berries appreciated by birds.
